European-Made Fuel Cell Sensor & Accuracy
Minilab IQ uses a European-made fuel cell sensor, the same core technology used by Irish Gardaí and police forces worldwide. This alcohol-specific sensor reacts only to ethanol in breath. Accuracy: − 0 / +0.015 %BAC. The device is designed not to under-read alcohol levels and instead slightly over-read to provide an additional safety margin.
The Fuel Cell Difference
Fuel cell sensors provide accurate, stable readings across a wide range of alcohol levels. Unlike semiconductor breathalysers, which can react to other breath compounds, fuel cell technology is designed specifically to measure alcohol.
Breath Flow Capture Control
Minilab IQ captures a deep-lung air sample for each test to help preventunderestimated results. Breath flow is monitored and the user is prompted to repeat thetest if a sufficient sample is not detected.
All serious alcohol testing devices require periodic calibration – except this one.
Minilab IQ features a user-replaceable fuel cell sensor, allowing the device to maintain professional accuracy without being returned to our lab for service. When the sensor reaches the end of its service life, it can be replaced by the user in seconds.
A Sensor Change / Calibration message appears after approximately 500 tests, indicating it is time to consider replacing the sensor. For users who prefer traditional servicing, the device can still be professionally calibrated at our lab in Ireland, where Minilab Healthcare provides a 48-hour calibration service.
The Minilab IQ Pro pack includes the Minilab IQ breathalyser together with a Bluetooth thermal printer for instant printed test results. The kit includes the Minilab IQ device, are chargeable Bluetooth thermal printer, printer rolls, charging cables, and a hard carry case, providing a complete portable testing solution.

The Minilab IQ is a consumer screening device intended only to provide an estimate of breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) at the time of testing for personal informational purposes. It is not an evidential instrument and is not approved for legal, law enforcement, workplace disciplinary, or court-admissible use. The device does not determine intoxication, impairment, or fitness to drive or operate machinery, and results must never be used to decide whether a person should drive, operate machinery, or undertake any activity requiring alertness or legal compliance. A low, “LO,” or zero reading does not guarantee absence of impairment, safe reaction time, or compliance with legal limits. The only safe level of alcohol for driving is zero, and this device must never be used to justify drinking and driving. Results are estimates based on breath alcohol concentration and may not precisely reflect blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
Readings may be affected by factors including, but not limited to, recent alcohol consumption, residual mouth alcohol, food intake, smoking, mouthwash or oral products, environmental alcohol vapours, temperature, humidity, improper breath technique, improper storage, or failure to follow instructions. Users should wait at least 20–30 minutes after eating, drinking alcohol, smoking, or using oral products before testing to reduce the risk of inaccurate readings or sensor damage. Alcohol levels may continue to rise after drinking has ceased and as a result, reflect only the moment of testing. The device uses fuel-cell sensor technology designed to detect ethanol specifically.
While fuel-cell technology reduces cross-sensitivity compared with semiconductor sensors, the presence of non-ethanol alcohols (including methanol or isopropanol) or high concentrations of certain volatile organic compounds may influence readings. Certain medical or physiological conditions, including diabetes, ketosis, ketoacidosis, or other metabolic states, may produce breath compounds that could affect results. Alcohol limits vary by jurisdiction, and users are solely responsible for understanding and complying with applicable laws. Alert thresholds within the device are userconfigurable and do not replace legal limits. Like all precision instruments, the device requires periodic calibration and, where applicable, sensor replacement to maintain performance, and improper use or failure to follow instructions may affect accuracy
